Kedarnath Temple – History

Kedarnath Temple is one of the most ancient and sacred Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, India, at an altitude of about 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) above sea level. Kedarnath is an important part of the Char Dham Yatra and is also counted among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

Mythological History

According to Hindu mythology, after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva for their sins. Lord Shiva avoided them and took the form of a bull (Nandi), hiding in the Himalayas.
When Bhima recognized Him, Shiva dived into the earth. His body appeared at different places, which later became known as the Panch Kedar.
At Kedarnath, the hump (back) of Lord Shiva is worshipped

Historical Background

The present Kedarnath Temple is believed to have been built in the 8th–9th century CE by Adi Shankaracharya.
The temple is constructed from massive stone slabs, assembled without the use of mortar.
Inside the sanctum is an irregularly shaped Shiva Lingam, representing Lord Shiva

Survival Through Natural Disasters

During the devastating 2013 Uttarakhand floods, most of the Kedarnath valley was destroyed.
Miraculously, the Kedarnath Temple remained largely unharmed.
A massive rock behind the temple, known as the Bhima Shila, diverted the floodwaters and protected the shrine

Seasonal Worship Tradition

Due to extreme winter snowfall, the temple remains closed for nearly six months.
During this period, the idol of Lord Kedarnath is worshipped at Ukhi Math.
The temple usually opens in April or May and closes in October or November, depending on weather conditions

Religious Importance

Kedarnath is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for Shiva devotees.
Visiting Kedarnath is believed to wash away sins and lead one toward moksha (liberation).
Every year, lakhs of pilgrims from India and abroad visit this sacred shrine
