Walk from the sacred town of Gangotri to Gomukh, the snout of the Gangotri Glacier, and continue towards the high-altitude meadows of Tapovan beneath the dramatic peaks of Shivling and the Bhagirathi group.
Our Gomukh Tapovan Trek Package is designed for trekkers who want more than a short pilgrimage walk. The route combines high-altitude trekking, glacier landscapes, mountain camps and the spiritual atmosphere of Gangotri.
The trek is physically demanding, especially beyond Gomukh towards Tapovan, so the itinerary is planned around realistic walking hours, acclimatization, weather conditions and local route requirements.

Tapovan is generally described at around 4,460 m, while Gomukh is around 3,900–4,000 m depending on the source and measurement point.
The Gomukh Tapovan Trek begins at Gangotri, one of Uttarakhand’s most important pilgrimage destinations. From Gangotri, the trail follows the Bhagirathi valley through Chirbasa and Bhojbasa before reaching Gomukh.
The landscape changes noticeably as you gain altitude. Forest vegetation gradually becomes sparse, the valley opens up around Bhojbasa, and the trail becomes increasingly rocky as you approach Gomukh.
Gomukh is the snout of the Gangotri Glacier and an important pilgrimage destination associated with the origin of the Ganga.
The Tapovan section is considerably more demanding. From Gomukh, the route involves steep climbing and rough glacial/moraine terrain before reaching the high-altitude meadows of Tapovan. Uttarakhand Tourism describes the Gomukh-to-Tapovan section as a steep and challenging climb and recommends doing it with a guide.
From Tapovan, trekkers get close views of major Himalayan peaks including Mount Shivling and the Bhagirathi group.
Altitude: Approximately 3,048 m
Trekking: No major trekking
Arrive in Gangotri and check into your accommodation.
After settling in, take a short acclimatization walk around Gangotri. You can visit the Gangotri Temple and spend some quiet time near the Bhagirathi River.
The main purpose of the day is to allow your body to adjust to Gangotri’s high altitude before starting the trek.
Overnight: Gangotri
Meals: Dinner
Trek: Approximately 8–10 km
Walking time: Around 4–5 hours
Difficulty: Moderate
After breakfast, begin the trek from Gangotri.
The trail follows the Bhagirathi valley and gradually moves away from the town. Chirbasa is one of the important points on the route and marks the transition towards the more open high-altitude landscape.
The trail is relatively manageable compared with the Gomukh–Tapovan section, but the starting altitude makes pacing important.
Overnight: Chirbasa/Bhojbasa, depending on the final itinerary and permitted camping arrangements
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Distance: Approximately 5–6 km
Walking time: Around 3–4 hours
Altitude: Approximately 3,800 m
Continue towards Bhojbasa through increasingly open terrain.
The Bhagirathi peaks become more prominent as you move deeper into the valley. Bhojbasa is an important halt before Gomukh.
This is also a useful day for conserving energy because the next stage towards Gomukh and Tapovan is more demanding.
Overnight: Bhojbasa
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Uttarakhand Tourism lists Bhojbasa at approximately 3,800 m and notes that camping beyond Bhojbasa towards Gomukh is prohibited under the stated itinerary guidance, so the exact overnight arrangement should follow current forest regulations.
Trek: Approximately 9–10 km depending on the route
Walking time: Around 7–9 hours
Difficulty: Challenging
Maximum altitude: Approximately 4,460 m
This is the key day of the trek.
Start early from Bhojbasa towards Gomukh. The route becomes increasingly rocky as you approach the glacier.
After reaching Gomukh, the trail towards Tapovan becomes significantly more difficult. Expect steep climbing, loose rocks, moraine terrain and changing trail conditions.
The final ascent towards Tapovan requires careful foot placement and should be undertaken with experienced local guidance.
Reach Tapovan and settle into the campsite if current conditions and permissions allow.
Overnight: Tapovan, subject to current local/forest regulations
Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner
The official Uttarakhand Tourism itinerary describes the Gomukh-to-Tapovan section as a steep ascent, including a challenging final climb, and specifically recommends a guide.
Altitude: Approximately 4,460 m
Walking: Short local exploration, subject to weather and guide assessment
Wake up to views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
Depending on weather, trail conditions and the group’s fitness, the guide may plan a short exploration around Tapovan.
This is not a day for unnecessary long-distance walking. At this altitude, rest and hydration are important.
Spend time photographing the landscape and experiencing the high-altitude environment before preparing for the return journey.
Overnight: Tapovan or return towards Bhojbasa, according to the selected itinerary and current regulations
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Walking time: Approximately 4–6 hours
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
Begin the descent from Tapovan.
Descending the steep and rocky sections requires just as much attention as climbing them. Loose terrain can make the return journey slower than expected.
Continue back towards Gomukh and Bhojbasa.
Overnight: Bhojbasa
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Distance: Approximately 13–14 km
Walking time: Around 5–8 hours
After breakfast, begin the final trek towards Gangotri.
The trail gradually returns through the Bhojbasa and Chirbasa sections. As you lose altitude, vegetation becomes more visible again.
Reach Gangotri by afternoon/evening depending on group pace and trail conditions.
The Gomukh Tapovan trekking section ends at Gangotri.
Overnight: Gangotri / onward transfer depending on package selection.
The classic route is:
Gangotri → Chirbasa → Bhojbasa → Gomukh → Tapovan → Bhojbasa → Chirbasa → Gangotri
Gangotri is the roadhead for the trek.
The route becomes progressively more demanding after Bhojbasa, with the section from Gomukh to Tapovan being the most technical and physically demanding part of the standard trek.
Exact distance can vary because operators use slightly different route measurements and campsite plans.
A practical route estimate is:
Location              Approx. Altitude
Gangotri              3,048 m
Chirbasa             ~3,500–3,600 m
Bhojbasa             ~3,790–3,800 m
Gomukh              ~3,900–4,000 m
Tapovan              ~4,460 m
Tapovan is commonly listed at approximately 4,460 m, while official Uttarakhand Tourism information gives Gomukh at approximately 4,000 m and Tapovan at 4,460 m.
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
The Gomukh section alone is manageable for trekkers with reasonable fitness, but the extension from Gomukh to Tapovan makes the trek substantially harder.
The main challenges include:
The Tapovan climb should not be treated like an ordinary walking trail. Current conditions can change the difficulty considerably.
The best trekking windows are generally during the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon periods, subject to current forest permissions and weather.
May to June
Usually offers a popular summer trekking window, although snow and trail conditions can vary.
July to August
Monsoon conditions can create increased risks from rain, landslides and unstable mountain terrain. Trek availability should be checked before booking.
September to October
Often preferred for clearer mountain views and cooler conditions, but nights can become very cold at higher camps.
Important: Trekking access, permits, camping rules and route conditions can change. Confirm the current season’s regulations before departure.
Depending on the selected package:
Final inclusions should always be confirmed in the booking quotation.
Â
Unless specifically mentioned in your package:
Â
The Gomukh route passes through Gangotri National Park, so trekking permits are required.
Uttarakhand Tourism states that permits are required for trekking to Gaumukh and beyond and that a guide is required for the Tapovan section. Permit requirements and procedures can change, so the latest rules should be checked before the trek.
Â
Hidden Trails Travel can assist travellers with the applicable permit process as part of the package arrangement.
